12th place in Reception

The WPJA contest judges presented Masao Okano, a Massachusetts, United States wedding photographer, with this Master Piece Award as recognition for top wedding photojournalism in the industry.
The leading documentary wedding photographers in the world enter their best photos to the Wedding Photojournalist Association's photography competitions. They want their wedding reportage photographs to be evaluated and selected by some of the most notable and respected working picture editors and photojournalists in the news industry (these are not wedding photographers or other WPJA members judging their work). Winning these competitions is a true accomplishment for a wedding photographer.

- I’ve seen thousands of images of this wedding tradition, with the bride and groom aloft on chairs at their reception...but I have never seen a photo of someone beneath the chairs. I think of photojournalism as a means to show the uniqueness of things that are considered common because, in a sense, all things and people are fascinating, unique, when we choose to see them that way. I like this interesting view of a fun tradition in a well-executed image worthy of note.
Wedding photographer Masao Okano, was awarded 12th place for photo 1413506 in the Reception category for the WPJA's 2014 Q1 Photography Contest.
