Getting Ready

Photojournalism can bring insight into people, places and things we might otherwise never experience. Access, the privilege to bear witness with a camera, is often the key to enter those places. We often find insight, revelation or answers. And then there are moments like this that we are content to merely wonder.

The setting, the timing, the composition, even the correct perspective all combine to make this one a fun standout.

The hairstyles of the bridesmaids, their matching earrings, their facial expressions, the bouquets and even the circles on the box that holds them mimic the shapes on the wallpaper behind them. This image places us into a "where's Waldo" scene and proves yet again that there is nothing greater than the moment itself.

This picture could have been a winner in a couple different categories -- it’s surprising and funny and well done.

Great moment with the girls crowding the doorway to get a peak with the seemingly unknowing bride getting ready. Nice out of focus foreground.

It was all too tempting, so richly obvious, to wait for the moment - one that mirrors the Marilyn Monroe photo hanging almost demurely on the wall. The beauty of a moment is that is how something so small can speak so loudly when noticed.

There’s a wonderful use of color and framing to this picture that had you coming back to it. Very classy.

8th Place: Zhou Xiaonan from Ile-de-france, FranceJudges Comments
The graphic split of the image, all faces looking left and the good light makes this a winner.

The most photographed scenes are often the most difficult to photograph. We wonder, how can I bring something new to a scene that may have been photographed perhaps millions of times? The answer is the same as it is for any photo, regardless of ubiquity; use light well, compose, find the moment and press the shutter. Trust in the power of where you are - within the moment itself.

10th Place: Alessandro Baglioni from Grosseto, ItalyJudges Comments
Here we find a wonderful use of juxtaposition - two moments combining to provide a narrative. The warmth of a loving embrace colliding with the dour diligence, the harsh reality of time; one dismissing while the other never missing.

This great moment shows how eyebrow furling, coaxing and crying can all be a part of the at times stressful/frustrating part of getting ready.

This one is so clean and it really draws your eye in to the bride, but with a great angle and great timing.
