The sense of place in this photo is intense. Foreground, background, and the group of people in which each person is both distinct and anonymous, all contribute to making me feel the place. If any one of the elements had been out of place, this photograph would have come crashing down. Nicely handled.

This image has a beautiful feel to it. The photographers use of framing, and composition helped place this image high on my list. The contrast between the lines of lights and the lines on the coat are wonderful. Terrific tension

Nice color. Different. I loved the individual moments between these young women, however there wasn't enough sense of place for the image to rise in the category.

This was the most off-beat photo of the bunch, with great color and off-kilter composition, which adds a bit to the kitschy nature of the scene. This unexpected image of a very typical situation stands out for its use of light and the slight tilt to the frame. It expresses a unique way of dealing with an average subject, the cake.

This category is about sense of place, and this image brings all of the elements into a cohesive form. A nice composition and use of the available light to make a strong image.

Captures the grandiosity of the event. Sometimes our job is to step back and show what a place looks like. When the place looks like this, it might be a good idea. This photographer made it work by waiting for the right moment to make a picture that invites close inspection.

Simple. Elegant. One of only a few images that showed little of the entire room, but gave a great sense of the setting, and certainly the beauty of the moment.

8th Place: Susan Stripling from Florida, United StatesJudges Comments
There were some beautiful images in this category, but this image stood out for me, because the photographer looked beyond the obvious, and found some elements that really worked to make a very interesting image

Nice risk-taking in stepping back to include the empty chairs.

I literally get a peek in to the wedding party. And I'd like to join them. This photographer used a clichéd technique to make a fresh picture.
