I am Rich Howman, the owner of Élan Images, and wedding photography is all I do – pure and simple.
Accompanied by my amazing assistants I capture the story of your wedding day in a professional, creative and beautiful way and never underestimate what memories mean to you. When my clients look back at their images they relive the beautiful moments they enjoyed, the emotions and the tender and often funny things which happened. I want my lovely clients not just say “that’s another nice one”, but “Wow! That’s amazing!” or “Do you remember that moment!“. What makes Élan Images different from other wedding photographers? Well we are delighted (and humbled) to be accepted members of the top Wedding Photography organisations in the world; The International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers ISPWP, ‘Fearless Photographers’ and recently the ‘Wedding Photo Journalists Association‘ (WPJA).
Getting to know you
I have a true creative focus, and a very relaxed approach. Every couple I work with has something truly unique to them and my photographs reflect this. By the time your special day arrives, we won’t be strangers as I take time to get to know you and what your planning for your day. I am there to capture your relationship with each other, not the camera, so whilst fun is definitely on the menu – cheese is not. When you are relaxed and at ease you will be yourselves, and then I will achieve beautifully natural pictures. Initially I like to meet up if you’re in the area – maybe go for a coffee and some cake, or visit the venue with you and talk through your plans. Alternatively if you’re a long way away we can chat on Skype or Facetime. This planning ensures that I’m a step ahead on the day – in the right place at the right time to capture what’s happening around me.

Always get on the level of your subjects – this picture is why that rule works. Nice expression and nice gestures caught. Funny to see this parent trying to negotiate with a toddler! Love this picture.
Strong, reflective moment. I might have composed it a little different, but nice.
Great light and nice body language made this a very successful photograph. I loved the expression on the woman’s face. A quiet photo, but very well composed.
Photographer's CommentI was delighted to achieve a first place with this photograph from a beautiful vintage wedding at Lympne Castle in Kent. I adopt a pure reportage / documentary approach to photographing weddings and this shot was borne entirely of that. On the wedding day space was very limited, light was coming in from the window looking out to sea and only the groom was 'front lit' by glancing through the groomsmen in the mirror. I was shooting quite wide due to the dark room and was really pleased when the groom just popped in to view...and framed quite nicely. I often think the Groom and his groomsmen in general can be a little overlooked during wedding photography - particularly in the morning when they are getting ready. So I do like to spend a decent amount of time with them. It's always appreciated by the bride when she sees the full story of her day when the images are finally presented. Photo was shot RAW on a Nikon D3S | Nikon 24-70mm, f2.8 lens | Focal length 31mm | at f2.8 | ISO: 2800 | Shutter speed: 2800 | Post production was in Lightroom and Photoshop.
I like this picture because its has it all: its documentary style catching the moment but being still well lit and nicely composed. I like the way the two friends are backlit and the light falls perfectly on the reflection of the groom.
Great composition, layering and use of light. The mirroring of the moments really works and tells the story of the men getting ready together in a visually pleasing frame.
