At-Home Backyard Garden Wedding in Pittsburgh, PA Elopement Photo Story Award

Outdoor Backyard micro-Wedding image from Pittsburgh showing a friend as the officiant and 20 guests

Outdoor Backyard Wedding Photo - Pittsburgh | A friend as the officiant and roughly 20 other guests

This is actually a homage to the first photo assignment I was given as an intern during my newspaper days back in 2008. The assignment was to photograph a pond. It was super boring, and my boss showed me how to look for elements to make the pond a more interesting composition, such as shooting past a branch at the top of the frame, exactly like this. Also, I love that it shows the guests and that where I was positioned I could be a standing guest as well.

Alex and Beau were set to have an elaborate wedding in a trendy hotel in Pittsburgh, PA but decided to push back their wedding to next year. They decided, with only a few weeks to spare, to go ahead and still get married on their original wedding day. They held their ceremony in the bride's mother's backyard with their friend as the officiant and roughly 20 other guests.

As I was arriving at the wedding, I saw Beau, the groom, hanging a pink "love" balloon at the site of the backyard wedding. This is the home of the bride's mother in a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Backyard Ceremony Picture in Pittsburgh - Small Weddings, PA | 2 guests wearing masks shot at a low angle framed between two vegetable plants

These are 2 guests wearing masks shot at a low angle framed between two vegetable plants prior to the start of the backyard wedding. I wanted to incorporate the blue sky and also pick up details that the wedding was held next to a garden.

Micro-Backyard Elopement Ceremony image with The officiant, a friend of the couple

Backyard Wedding Ceremony Photos | The officiant is a friend of the couple

The officiant is a friend of the couple and had asked that I incorporate photos of just him during their ceremony. I got the shot with the hands in focus and wanted to shoot past the typical shot to focus on him and got lucky when he happened to laugh at the right time.

Intimate Backyard elopement image of guests asking to see the grooms wedding band

Backyard Wedding Photography | guests asking to see the wedding band

I love this image because it doesn't take much explanation. This is a common scene at weddings--guests asking to see the wedding band. I especially love the chainlink fence, plastic chair in the background, and the groom's body language.

Mini-Backyard Wedding ceremony image showing The couple have 2 very beloved dogs

Backyard Wedding Photographers, PA | The couple have 2 very beloved dogs

The couple have 2 very beloved dogs that briefly visited the guests. They really wanted the dogs involved, so during the speeches the dogs got to stroll amongst the guests. I love everyone's body language in this, and that the dog is easily seen against the couple's outfits. I especially love the gesture from the best man.

Backyard Weddings - PA Photographer | empty chairs to the house on the left verses how packed it is to the right

This is another perspective to show how truly "backyard" this wedding was. I love seeing the empty chairs to the house on the left verses how packed it is to the right. I also love seeing the bits of leaves at the top of the frame.

At-Home Street Wedding Couple shoot out at the streets to give them some privacy from their guests

At-Home Street Wedding Couple Image, PA | A shoot out at the streets to give them some privacy from their guests

When it came time to do their portraits, I asked the couple to come out to the street to give them some privacy from their guests. I love the leading lines from the cars and the street tar lines towards the couple and the gentle flip in the bride's dress.
