9th place in Departure
The WPJA contest judges presented Dave Getzschman, a United States wedding photographer, with this Master Piece Award as recognition for top wedding photojournalism in the industry.
The leading documentary wedding photographers in the world enter their best photos to the Wedding Photojournalist Association's photography competitions. They want their wedding reportage photographs to be evaluated and selected by some of the most notable and respected working picture editors and photojournalists in the news industry (these are not wedding photographers or other WPJA members judging their work). Winning these competitions is a true accomplishment for a wedding photographer.

- Sometimes I look at an image, as a judge, and I don't want to say anything. I want to turn to the world and say, "This is a wonderful photo. Isn't it obvious?" But for the sake of understanding, there is very little not to like about this image with it's beautiful tones and rich compositional elements. I particularly like a wide angle image like this that is essential a detail. It's a macro view of a moment that actually IS the moment itself. I care little about their faces or the overall scene. All I see is an image that speaks of a repose echoed by the gentility of the photo itself.
