Steve began his professional photography career after receiving his Bachelors of Science in Journalism from Ohio University's School of Visual Communication in 1994, and began working as a photojournalist at various smaller newspapers in the midwest. In 1998, he moved to suburban Chicago to work at the Elgin Courier News and then onto its sister paper, the Aurora Beacon News, where he remained until 2005 as both chief photographer and photo editor. In the spring of 2005, he began his current position as a picture editor for the Chicago Tribune.
His work has been recognized by numerous prestigious organizations including the University of Missouri Pictures of the Year competition, National Press Photographers Association, and the Illinois and Ohio Press Photographer Pictures of the Year competitions.
