When is was about 15 years old I borrowed my dads old Fujica SLR to take photos of my friends skateboarding. Next I enrolled into every...otography class my high school offered and spent a lot of time shooting skating and concerts. After graduation, while I knew I wanted to be a photographer, it took me a year working at a photo lab to realize that camera sales and printing color photos of birthday parties was not the same as photography.
I entered the Art Institute of Colorado, where I recieved 2 years of education. I assisted an architectural photographer for the summer and I learned a lot about light. Next, a two month long road trip with my friend and fellow photographer Shane Macomber from Denver to Tijuana to Vancouver photographing everything I could lay my eyes on. Two more years of photography school allowed me to receive a bachelors degree, followed by four years as a staff photographer at the Vail Daily and one year as Photo Editor.
I left the newspaper biz at the end September 2008 and decided to spend three months traveling Europe while living in Mezzegra Como, Italy. I now find myself back in Colorado bouncing between Denver and Vail, working as a freelance photographer and excited about my future. For me, photography is more than a job or a career it is a lifestyle.Read More
After working as a staff photographer for news papers such as The Denver Post for more than 20-years, I started my own wedding photography...siness in 1997, specializing in wedding photojournalism. Having a BA in journalism and two feature Pulitzer entries to my credits prepared me for my career of documenting weddings. My first taste of wedding photojournalism came to me while I was traveling in Japan where I was allowed to photograph parts of a traditional wedding. At the time I was working for the Denver Post. Within a year I left the paper to start my own wedding photography business.
Since then I've managed to photograph completely traditional weddings in both Italy and China. Someday I hope to publish a book on wedding cultures of the world. These experiences have helped me grow as a photojournalist so that I don't depend on spoken language as much as body language and respect while I am working. Even here in Denver I get many different types of wedding cultures and traditions such as Buddhist ceremonies. Last year I was hired to photograph one couples western wedding here in Denver and a Vietnamese Buddhist wedding in New Orleans the following week.
I've always loved telling stories with my pictures. Now I get to cover about 20 weddings a year and tell the stories in web based slideshows and in custom made books.Read More

Since graduating from East Texas State University with a master's degree in photojournalism, James has operated his own professional...otography business first in east Texas and now in the four corners area of southwest Colorado near Durango. His assignments have ranged from advertising to nature and wildlife to magazine editorialism to photojournalism and fine art. James' personal photographic art has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries including the Dallas Museum of Fine Art and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. This invaluable experience gathered from over two decades as a professional photographer is brought to every wedding that James photographs.
In 2004 two things convinced James that the time was right for him to focus his talents on wedding photography. Firstly, digital photography had come of age. The quality of the digital image captured by today's professional cameras rivals the images made from film. And no longer would the cost of film and processing limit the number of photos that a photographer could shoot at an assignment. Furthermore the ability to transmit images via the internet and order online is an undeniable convenience to the client.
Secondly, wedding photojournalism had become the style that savvy and sophisticated brides and grooms wanted in their albums. To James the wedding photos should tell the story of the wedding events not be a compilation of posed photographs. Weddings are overflowing with emotions. James believes that it is the photographer's responsibility to capture those emotions with the camera.Read More

As a documentary photographer, my primary concern has been making revealing, interpretive images of subjects both common and misunderstood. I...gan photographing weddings several years ago, approaching them in much the same way as my long-term projects or a magazine story.
Aside from taking the occasional group photos, during my normal coverage I don't arrange or stage my pictures in any way. I prefer to work with reality as I find it, and the authenticity of the resulting images is important to me. I want my subjects to look back at their photos ten, twenty, fifty years from now and remember precisely what they felt at the time. My focus is to convey the feeling of the day, the often complex relationships between those involved, and most of all, what is specific to them as individuals.
I work unobtrusively. It's hard to show people as they are if you're drawing attention to yourself. So I blend in, present but overlooked, quickly part of the background. I naturally concentrate on the couple, but also on their family and friends, what's happening in the corners, along the edges. I want the pictures to help them remember what they experienced, but also to show them things they never saw.
I tend to work with people seeking a different approach, those seeking not so much a book of Wedding Photos, but a series of beautiful, revealing pictures of one very specific point in their lives. Which just happens to be their wedding.
In my other life, I was a finalist for Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography and winner of a Clarion Award. My current project, Chica Barbie, was awarded the Blue Earth Alliance Prize for Best Project Photography, shown at the Palm Springs Photo Festival and the LOOK3 Festival of Photography in Charlottesville and is currently a finalist for the Critical Mass Book Award.

Thanks to everyone at WPJA for all of your hard work! I get a ton of bookings from my listings with you and know many of my colleagues do as well. Now if I could only get my gangsta necklace ...
I just wanted to thank you for starting and maintaining the WPJA. I love it. I am not surprised it is a highly criticized organization. That is because it is an
exceptional organization that is dramatically changing the industry. I can say for myself, I probably would not still be shooting weddings if it were not for the WPJA.
Being a part of a group that values truth, ethics, and authentic imagery as strongly as I do is very important. When I say I am a member of the WPJA, that is the best tool
I have to establish that I am a professional, with an ability to tell the AUTHENTIC story of their wedding.
I was just talking with a friend of mine about authenticity, in regard to the rise in popularity of Hip Hop. Russell Simmons, hip hop mogul and multi-millionaire, said:
"What the corporations dont understand is that the only formula for success in the [music] industry is authenticity." People know and respond to authenticity when they see
it --whether that is in music, film, television, or photography. That is why the WPJA is so threatening to purveyors of inauthentic products. They know it is a serious
threat to the survival of their business, and the wedding industry is, unfortunately, chock full of inauthentic vendors. I hope this whole WPJA phenomena turns the
industry on its head and completely changes the reputation wedding photography. And that is EXACTLY what the industry fears.
Keep up the good fight. You are onto something big.
This is my second year as a member of the WPJA and I am always proud to tell my clients what that means. Thanks to you and all the members for holding the bar so high.
