I don't usually plan my portraits too much beforehand, because I believe it will just flatten my creativity. I like to go with the flow so to speak. I think light is the single most important thing in a portrait and I always look for a good light. In this photo I saw that good moody light, positioned the groom in that light, framed it and took the photo.
