Bridal Party

What looks like a practical joke is actually the preparation for a group photo. The groom, on the left, and his ushers are attempting to climb onto a missile-shaped monument in St. Paul’s popular Como Park. Figuring the process would be as interesting as the final pose, Trygstad snapped the boisterous party launching their assault.

Each equipped with a camera, the bridesmaids are ready to capture some Kodak-worthy moments of their own. We love that the photographer chose to shoot in the opposite direction as everyone else.

In a noteworthy use of contrast, the photographer depicts the figures as if they’re floating out of the darkness. The boy in front is the only one looking at the camera and, on a level apart from the other subjects, he becomes that much more engaging. Simplicity is the key element here in this handsome photo of the groom’s group. The gentlemen in the background are the supporting cast to the main player up front, all providing a side story to the day.

Shot from a bird’s-eye view, the bridal party becomes a graphic element in this elaborate composition. There is so much to look at, from the food to the subjects’ body language, that it's a rare treat for the viewer. This photo caught my eye, and held it, on each “round” of my going through the collection of candidates. Truly a realistic moment, an “after” picture to the elegant images of cakes and brides.

This almost looks like New York during rush hour! The movement is beautiful surrounding the stationary bride and groom.

This group shot is simple yet beautiful. The photographer has figured out a clever twist to the traditional bridal party portrait. This photograph has perfect execution. The composition is excruciatingly precise, with each person specifically placed so the top of their heads are all on the same plane. Wonderful use of the leaves to add color and become a framing device completing the image.

With bouquets cast aside, the bridal party is caught sneaking a few bites of pizza. Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline make for a stunning backdrop. I love the facial expression of the central figure—he looks caught in the act!

The lighting and foggy background make this shot romantic. It is soft and serene.
