3rd place in Send Off/Departure
The WPJA contest judges presented Gary Allen, a North Carolina, United States wedding photographer, with this Master Piece Award as recognition for top wedding photojournalism in the industry.
The leading documentary wedding photographers in the world enter their best photos to the Wedding Photojournalist Association's photography competitions. They want their wedding reportage photographs to be evaluated and selected by some of the most notable and respected working picture editors and photojournalists in the news industry (these are not wedding photographers or other WPJA members judging their work). Winning these competitions is a true accomplishment for a wedding photographer.

- The newlyweds' joy is captured in the smiles of those bidding them farewell. The effectiveness of the image is helped by the variety of people in the frame: a sweet young girl clutching her flowers, timidly waving goodbye, her extended arm nicely framing a happy woman intensely recording the departure; an elderly gentleman watching, smiling, his finger on a camera's shutter waiting to preserve the moment. The little girl looks so grown up and regal. She is clutching her flowers and waving so gracefully. I also love how many cameras are in the shot. The girl here is so composed and sure of herself, as she sends the couple off with a look that says "good job."
