Getting Ready

There were a lot of variations on this theme of girl watching the women get ready, but this one nailed in with a great composition. This photograph's frame is chock full from edge to edge, top to bottom. And right there in the middle is the girl, getting ready. The hands in the foreground are very nice, and the arm framing the girl makes the photo hold together.

Funny. Well done. Unlike several other pictures in this category, this photograph is not well controlled. It looks like the photographer just saw a moment and flung a camera at it. And you know, it works. It's funny and engaging, proving that sometimes a photograph just has to let go and let the pictures enter the camera.

Fun and irreverent, the crop creates a strong tension that helps increase the intensity of the image. I love this moment. Great energy and I like the composition.

The tones in this image are a bonus to the great moment and super composition. The bride is almost glowing in the failing light as she does a touch-up. Nice!

This quirky and unusual image of the bride is a telling moment that goes beyond hairdressing and make-up. It expresses personality and surprise.

Another well-seen, well-controlled photograph full of many little scenes, one being the central scene. This way of seeing often makes for interesting photographs because we keep discovering new things as we continue to look at the photo. Mirrors are too often used in clichéd ways. In this photo, the mirror lets us see yet another scene, at left, where otherwise we'd just see a back. All this is anchored by a touching moment in the middle of the frame. Well built photo.

Every character in this scene has a role and is playing it. The photographer caught a sweet moment when each of the four men is involved in an activity, three of the four interacting. Well seen. Well shot.

What an unusual but wonderful moment. The composition, the bride looking back to dad, his reflection, all combine to make this a winner.

With the bride in the center of everyone's attention but with her back to the photographer we are left with a touch of mystery. The colors and light and placement of the subjects makes for a modern take on matrimony.
